Advice on choosing the correct width and size
When you go shopping for shoes, just realize that not all shoes are created according to the size mentioned on the shoe. Just because it says size 7 doesn’t mean that it will fit you if you’re a size 7.
Shopping for Shoes in the evening is the best time to get your correct shoe size
A good idea is to go shopping for shoes in the evening. Feet swell once you are walking a few hours. The size of your feet may not be the same in the morning compared to evening. Tight shoe in the toe area cause blisters and can misshape your feet causing defects like hammer toes. If you have different size feet, then buy the shoes according to the size of the biggest foot. Avoid future surgeries by taking the time to really feel the shoe before you buy. Walk around the store for 5 to 15 minutes.
If the shoes are not comfortable then don’t buy them!
If you can’t seem to find the size that you feel comfortable in, then look for shoe places that make custom size shoes. These are usually places that also make custom orthotics.
Wearing the shoe for a while before buying ensures proper foot comfort
Often the shoe may feel comfortable the moment you wear it, but after you have it on for 10 to 15 minutes then you may begin to feel the pressure points at places around your little toe and big toe. You may also notice pressure on the ball of the feet. It may be hurting the tendons. It is good to invest in a pair of after-market insoles. Often the manufacturers don’t put a thought for comfort. Most of the shoes are designed to look good. A good pair of shoe insoles that provides the proper comfort and shield the ball of your feet and the heel can go a long way in keeping you from getting sore and tired feet at the end of the day.
Always wear or bring along the socks you’ll be wearing when buying shoes.
Anatomy of a Well Made Shoe
Rubber Insoles and Leather uppers are the best options to look for when buying shoes. The Soles should be flexible and bend with your steps. They should have enough cushion to shield the tendons and tissues from the vertical pressure of impact when we walk.
They should have proper arch support. High heels should only be worn for short periods of time. Always bring a pair of flats along so that you can quickly change if high heels begin to bother you. High heels are known to cramp your toes. Your posture is affected and can cause all kind of pains in the ankle, knees and back.
How often should you change the shoes?
If you wear a pair of shoe on a regular basis then try the same pair of new shoes approximately after six months to see if you see a difference in comfort and get the new pair accordingly. You can also try buying a different model or type of a second pair of shoes to alternate.
Don’t buy a bunch of shoes that you are not going to wear often. The material ages and may not provide you the support needed. Once I tried a pair of a famous brand of expensive shoes that I didn’t wear for 4 years and found that the bottom just gave out after I took a few steps. The rubber soles just disintegrated.
It is recommended that you get a different pair for different activities like work, tennis, aerobics or walking etc. Always use wooden sweat absorbing shoe trees to keep the shape and keep the shoes odor free.
In closing, choose the shoes that will protect your feet according to the activity on hand. Your feet should feel natural when walking. There should be no pain on impact. Be aware of any pain you may feel around your ankle, knees or back when wearing a particular pair as compared to a pair that doesn’t cause pain. Take care of your feet.
